Press release summary

GeneDx and Mirum Pharmaceuticals have opened three sponsored testing programs that provide eligible patients with no-cost exome sequencing for unexplained cholestasis, idiopathic early-onset cataracts and peroxisomal biogenesis disorderโ€“Zellweger spectrum disorders.

The companies announced the programs Nov. 5. Eligible patients receive GeneDx ExomeDx testing in proband, duo or trio configurations. Clinicians receive a report with expert interpretation, and GeneDx offers post-test genetic counseling to help patients and families understand results and possible next steps.

Each program has separate criteria. The cholestasis pathway covers certain patients with unexplained or suspected inherited cholestatic liver disease. The cataract program is intended for people ages 2 to 35 with idiopathic cataracts not explained by infection, trauma or another nongenetic cause. The third program covers diagnosed or clinically suspected PBD-ZSD. Mirum funds testing, and GeneDx said no claim will be submitted to the patientโ€™s insurance.

Why it matters to laboratory readers: Sponsored testing can widen access to comprehensive genomic analysis and support earlier diagnosis of multisystem disorders. Ordering laboratories and clinicians should review eligibility, consent, data-use terms, result interpretation, counseling pathways and sponsor relationships before participation.
