Press release summary
Waters Corporation acquired MOBILion Systems, adding high-resolution ion-mobility separation technology to its mass spectrometry portfolio. Financial terms were not disclosed.
MOBILion developed Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations, or SLIM, which separates molecules by size, shape and charge in milliseconds. Waters said it plans to pair the technology with its Xevo MRT mass spectrometer and waters_connect software for proteomics research. The company also described potential links to its AI-enabled laboratory workflows, including automated experiment design and instrument operation.
The acquisition gives Waters ownership of MOBILion’s technology and ion-mobility expertise. Claims about increased proteome coverage, sensitivity and throughput remain prospective, and the announcement did not provide integration dates, validated workflows or independent comparative data. Waters also outlined longer-term possibilities in biomarker validation and blood-based diagnostics, but those applications are not current clinical products.
Why it matters to laboratory readers: Ion mobility can add an orthogonal separation step to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, helping researchers distinguish complex molecular features that LC-MS alone may not resolve. Proteomics laboratories considering the combined platform will still need details on availability, method transfer, data compatibility, service requirements and performance in representative sample types.
