Press release summary

Danaher said Oct. 7 that it plans to open an AI-powered autonomous laboratory at its Abcam business, with operations expected to scale in early 2027. The facility is intended to develop custom antibodies and other affinity reagents through a continuous design, build, test and learn cycle.

The proposed workflow will combine artificial intelligence and robotic orchestration from Automata with technologies from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies and Molecular Devices. Danaher said scientists will continue to make key decisions while the system generates designs, builds and tests candidates, and feeds results back into its models.

The company projects that the approach could shorten the path from an initial idea to a validated reagent by as much as eightfold and increase annual reagent output by up to 10 times. Those figures are forward-looking company estimates, and the laboratory is not yet operating at scale.

For laboratory readers, the project is a notable test of whether integrated instruments, standardized data and agentic software can move autonomous experimentation beyond isolated demonstrations and into repeatable life-sciences production.
