Press release summary
BioPerfectus has introduced the STAX-12A, a compact benchtop molecular diagnostic system designed to automate the workflow from sample preparation through PCR results.
The company announced the platform Nov. 5. STAX-12A combines nucleic acid extraction, pipetting, PCR amplification, eight-channel fluorescence detection and automated result analysis. It can process one to 12 samples at a time and supports detection of up to 64 targets per sample, according to BioPerfectus. Depending on the assay and workflow, results may be available in as little as one hour.
The system includes a built-in computer, barcode scanner and 10-inch touchscreen. BioPerfectus also lists UV disinfection, HEPA filtration, oil sealing, isolated tips and other measures intended to reduce contamination. The instrument can run compatible syndromic multiplex PCR panels for applications including fever, diarrhea and rash testing.
Why it matters to laboratory readers: An integrated system could reduce manual transfers and make multiplex molecular testing more practical for public-health laboratories and smaller clinical facilities. Laboratories should confirm local regulatory status, validated assay menus, throughput, maintenance requirements and biosafety procedures before adopting the platform. Performance and turnaround figures are company claims.
