Agilent Brings Guided Digital Execution to the Laboratory Bench

Agilent has introduced OpenLab Sync, a laboratory execution system designed to guide analysts through standardized digital procedures and preserve a traceable record of bench work.

Agilent Technologies has introduced OpenLab Sync, moving its OpenLab informatics portfolio into guided digital execution of laboratory procedures.

Laboratory execution systems sit between a written method and the analyst performing the work. They can present instructions in sequence, capture observations and calculations, enforce required checks, and assemble a record of what occurred. The goal is to reduce dependence on paper worksheets and locally interpreted procedures while keeping the analyst connected to instruments and data systems.

Guided procedures and connected methods

Agilent says OpenLab Sync supports standardized, traceable bench workflows and integrates with USP MethodConnect, a digital source for compendial methods. The company also describes the use of AI for instrument integration, workflow setup, search, and summarization. Those features could reduce configuration time when a laboratory converts an approved procedure into an executable digital workflow.

The product is intended to work across laboratory activities rather than remain tied to a single instrument. That distinction matters for methods that combine preparation, weighing, incubation, measurement, calculation, and review. A unified execution record can help quality teams reconstruct the complete sequence instead of collecting evidence from several systems.

Method control remains essential

A digital workflow must faithfully represent the approved method. Laboratories should establish how a procedure is authored, reviewed, versioned, released, and withdrawn. They should also test how the system handles deviations, repeated steps, instrument downtime, and work performed outside the expected sequence.

Agilent says OpenLab Sync is available globally. Buyers should confirm regional availability, supported integrations, licensing, validation materials, and the boundaries of the AI functions. For laboratories modernizing paper-heavy execution, the product broadens the options available from a major analytical-instrument supplier. Its success will depend on the effort required to configure high-quality procedures and the degree to which analysts find the guided experience practical at the bench.
