Press release summary
Relay Robotics has deployed two autonomous delivery robots at HCA Florida JFK Hospital in Atlantis, Florida, to support routine transport inside the hospital. The robots, named Dash and Daisy, are being used to move laboratory specimens, medications, pharmacy orders, monitoring equipment and laboratory materials, including deliveries to areas not served by pneumatic tubes.
The system uses lidar, sensors and computer vision to navigate corridors. Authorized staff place items in lockable compartments and select a destination. Relay said the deployment integrates the robots with elevators, secure doors, hospital information technology and fire and life-safety systems without requiring tracks or major construction. The company reports delivery reliability above 99%, although it did not provide site-specific results or an independent assessment for this installation.
Why it matters for laboratories
Specimen transport time, chain of custody and staffing availability can affect laboratory turnaround and preanalytical quality. Autonomous delivery may help hospitals cover routes outside pneumatic-tube networks while keeping clinical staff in patient-care areas. Laboratories evaluating the approach should validate specimen stability, priority handling, spill response, temperature limits, access controls, downtime procedures and interface responsibilities. The announcement describes the deployment but does not report measured changes in turnaround time, labor use or specimen rejection rates.
